The number of different kinds of toothpastes has increased so much over the years that finding the right toothpaste for you and your family may be overwhelming.  Here is some information about the different kinds available to help you make an easier choice.

The basic ingredients in all toothpastes is fluoride, water, foaming agent, abrasive substance, and a flavor.

Fluoride is the most important ingredient in toothpaste. Fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay, helps to protect teeth from acid after eating sugar and starches, strengthens enamel, and reverses the early stages of demineralization of the enamel.

Whitening toothpaste contains an abrasive component and/ or enzymes to remove the surface stains from the teeth.  When the toothpaste is used twice a day, it will take two to four weeks to notice a change in the tooth color.  Due to the abrasive component, whitening toothpastes can actually decrease the amount of the enamel on the teeth.  Therefore the use of whitening toothpaste should be limited and not routinely used.  Please consult Dr. A or Dr. R if you have questions.

Herbal or natural toothpaste does not contain dyes or artificial flavors. The common ingredients are baking soda, aloe, eucalyptus oil, myrrh, and plant extract.

Tartar control toothpaste can help to prevent the accumulation of tartar. Tartar can not be removed by toothpaste, but rather the formation of tartar should be prevented by regular flossing and brushing. If the accumulation of tartar occurs it will need to be removed by a dentist or dental hygienist with dental instruments.  The most effective brands contain multiple anti-plaque agents.

Sensitive teeth toothpaste works by blocking pathways through the teeth that attach to nerves inside the teeth. The paste contains potassium nitrate or strontium chloride for effectiveness and is deposited in the enamel with regular brushing. It may take four weeks to notice relief from the sensitivity.
