Orthodontic Facts:

An orthodontist needs 4 yrs of college, 4 yrs of dental school, and 2-3 yrs of postgraduate study in orthodontics before they can be considered a specialist in orthodontics.

A child should have their first orthodontic evaluation at the age of 7.

The first braces were constructed by Pierre Fauchard in 1728. The braces consisted of a flat strip of metal, which was connected to the teeth by pieces of tan thread.

Orthodontic bands were invented by Schange in 1841. They consisted of a strip of metal and a screw used to adjust the size of the band.

Orthodontic brackets, more similar to what is used today, were invented by Edward Angle in 1915.

The first certified orthodontist in the US was Charles Tweed, who devoted himself to this area of study for 42 yrs.

An estimated 1 million Americans over the age of 18 have decided on orthodontic care to straighten their teeth.

Dental Facts:

Right handed people chew more on their right side and left handed people more so on their left side.

Identical twins have similar tooth developmental patterns. If one twin has a tooth that is slow to erupt then it is likely that the other twin will have the same tooth erupt slowly.

Snoring can be accentuated by the shape and size of your mouth.  If the roof of your mouth is narrow you are likely to snore because the tongue placement may decrease the amount of oxygen that can pass through.
